BOULDER, Colo.—Police have arrested University of Colorado freshman linebacker Lynn Katoa for investigation of second-degree assault on another CU student.
The 18-year-old was being held on bail of $5,000 Friday after turning himself in, police said. He graduated from Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake City in December and already has enrolled at CU.
Coach Dan Hawkins said Katoa would be suspended from competition, but would still be allowed to practice until the case is resolved.
Police said the assault at an off-campus party at an apartment Feb. 16 stemmed from an earlier fight outside the building, where one of Katoa’s friends was shocked by a stun gun.
Witnesses said the suspect came into the apartment yelling, pushed Cameron Shafer’s head into a wall and hit him in the forehead while holding a rock in his fist. Shafer needed stitches.
Police said the suspect then punched another victim in the head. That victim declined to pursue charges.
The people with the stun gun have not been identified, police said.
“We are mentoring our student athletes to be first class people, students and athletes,” Hawkins said in a written statement. “I do not condone our players engaging in violent personal altercations, or any illegal or unethical conduct.”
