STERLING—A man accidentally shot himself when his truck rolled after he led law enforcement officials on a 30-mile long chase.

Officials say 31-year-old John Wade Biggs sped away when Morgan County Sheriff James Crone tried to contact him Friday. Biggs was suspected of leaving a gas station without paying for gas.

Deputies from two neighboring counties and a state trooper joined in the high-speed chase, which ended in a field. Biggs’ truck flipped on its driver’s side after officials used their cars to bump his vehicle to make it stop.

Biggs says that’s when he accidentally shot himself in the abdomen. He now faces several charges, including theft and vehicular eluding. Biggs is also wanted in another county in a previous case.
