Two Democrats vying for delegates in the 2nd Congressional District race have guaranteed themselves slots on the August primary ballot.
County assemblies on Saturday left former state Senate leader Joan Fitz-Gerald with about 55 percent of the district’s delegates and show her leading in nine of 10 counties, including Boulder County.
Jared Polis’ campaign, painting him as the underdog, celebrated a win in Broomfield County and took more than a third of the total delegates up for grabs. Polis hails from Boulder.
Candidates must meet the threshold of 30 percent of delegates to secure their ballot spots and compete for the seat vacated by U.S. Rep. Mark Udall, who is running for the U.S. Senate.
Environmental conservationist Will Shafroth, who has opted out of the delegate process, will begin an effort to petition his way onto the ballot soon, staffers say.
Fitz-Gerald won 484.5 delegates, by her count. Polis won 286.5 delegates, his camp said.
There are minor differences in both campaigns’ self-reported totals.
