TUCSON — Jayson Nix, on the verge of clinching the Rockies’ starting second base job, was scratched from today’s Cactus League game against the White Sox because of a stiff lower back. The Rockies are calling his status “day to day.”
Nix, who shined at Triple-A Colorado Springs last season, came into spring training as the favorite to replace Kazuo Matsui.
Nix, known more for his glove than his bat, started camp slowly, but he’s come on strong lately. Monday, Nix homered to left field and singled twice, raising his average to .273. Of his six Cactus League hits, three are homers.
