DENVER—Oil and gas workers and companies are asking state officials not to hurt the industry as they rewrite regulations.

About 300 people turned out for an industry-sponsored rally at the state Capitol Thursday. People waved signs saying “Don’t rule us out” as speakers urged the state not to overburden the industry.

The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission has proposed preliminary rules to implement two new laws that require input from state wildlife, health and environment agencies when approving oil and gas development. There have been public hearings and several sessions with various interest groups. Draft rules will be released at the end of March with more hearings to be held.

Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman Deb Frazier says the state wants to see the industry continue to thrive while protecting public health and the environment in the midst of record natural gas development.
