LONDON — Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, Prince Philip, remained in the hospital Saturday after a chest infection, Buckingham Palace said.

Philip, 86, suffered from a cold that worsened in recent days, the palace has said. A spokeswoman declined Saturday to give an update on his condition.

But the palace spokeswoman added that the prince’s engagements Monday evening had not been canceled, which suggests that Philip was expected to be out of the hospital by then. She spoke on condition of anonymity in line with palace policy.

The prince was taken to the hospital Thursday, and officials said he traveled there by private car and was strong enough to walk into the building without assistance.

Philip has been married to the queen since 1947. A member of the Greek royal family, he renounced his royal title when he became a naturalized British subject in 1947.

He has no constitutional role other than as one of the queen’s privy counsellors.
