A Larimer County sheriff’s deputy lost control of his SUV early this morning in Fort Collins after swerving to avoid a pedestrian, authorities said.

The accident happened at about 2:50 a.m. in the 1400 block of North College Avenue, said Rita Davis, a Fort Collins Police Department spokeswoman.

The sheriff’s office identified the deputy as Greg Hibler, a member of the K-9 Unit.

Hibler, driving a 2006 Expedition, was responding to assist a sergeant in a vehicle pursuit in LaPorte when a pedestrian crossed the street in front of him, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The deputy lost control of the SUV and hit a street light, signpost and tree, Davis said.

The pedestrian was not injured and left the scene, the sheriff’s office said. The SUV was totaled.

Hibler was taken to Poudre Valley Hospital where he was treated and released, the sheriff’s office said.

Griffin, Hibler’s police dog, has been checked by a veterinarian and will be checked again this evening, the sheriff’s office said.
