DENVER—A proposal to ask health insurers to come up with no-frills plans for the uninsured has won initial backing in the Senate.
Democratic Sen. Bob Hagedorn proposed Senate Bill 217 with an eye toward mandating coverage for all Coloradans if the state can subsidize policies for those who can’t afford them.
Insurance companies will be asked to propose plans based on how much they would cost both with and without such a mandate.
In a change from the original bill, the Legislature could consider the plans as soon as next spring or in a special session next summer.
The bill must pass another vote in the Senate before it could be sent to the House.
