DENVER—U.S. Forest Service Chief Gail Kimbell says it looks like it could be a busy wildfire season.
Kimbell points to wildfires burning in Arizona and New Mexico, and last week’s fires in eastern Colorado, as evidence that it’s already busy.
Drought in the Southeast has fueled wildfires there, helping boost the Forest Service’s firefighting costs to $400 million so far this year.
Kimbell says a proposal in Congress to establish a fund to pay for catastrophic wildfires would help the Forest Service.
The agency spends about half of its roughly $4 billion budget on firefighting.
