TRENTON, N.J.—Beef sold at some military bases around the country—including two bases in New Jersey—may have be contaminated with E. coli.
The Defense Department has issued a voluntary recall on all 85 percent lean ground beef sold at Fort Monmouth, the Lakehurst Navy base and eight other stores around the country.
In a statement issued Thursday, the military suggested that anyone who bought the meat this month should throw it away or return it for a full refund.
The department issued the recall after conducting lab tests on beef from one supplier.
The recall also affects the military’s stores in Great Lakes, Ill.; Fort McCoy, Wis.; Bolling Air Force Base, D.C.; Carlisle Barracks, Pa.; Naval Submarine Base New London, Conn.; Tobyhanna Army Depot, Pa.; Fort Carson, Colo.; and Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
E. coli can cause potentially deadly diarrhea and dehydration. The elderly and the young are particularly prone to the food-borne disease.
