CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Bobcats coach Larry Brown is pursuing his former college teammate Doug Moe to join his new coaching staff.

Brown indicated he was trying to get Moe, 69, to agree to return to the bench. Moe, who played with Brown at North Carolina, is expected to retire as an assistant with the Nuggets.

“I talked to him and we’re going to talk some more,” Brown said. “He had asked me, ‘What would I do?’ I said, ‘Whatever you want.’ He’s pretty special.”

• The search for a replacement for Phoenix Suns coach Mike D’Antoni apparently is down to four candidates — Mike Budenholzer, Terry Porter, Tyrone Corbin and former Nuggets guard Elston Turner.

Woods plays round

LA JOLLA, Calif. — Tiger Woods played his first round of golf since knee surgery two days after the Masters, getting a thumbs-up from his swing coach after 17-plus holes at Torrey Pines riding in a cart.

Eight days before the start of the U.S. Open, Woods played in solitude on the South Course with swing coach Hank Haney, stopping only when he saw a small group of people with cameras waiting around the 18th green.

“It went well,” Haney said. “He hit the ball really well. It was definitely a positive day.”

Tight end Stevens suspended

TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Jerramy Stevens was suspended without pay for the first two games of the season and fined an additional game check for violating the NFL’s substance- abuse policy.

• New England Patriots offensive lineman Nicholas Kaczur worked as an informant for federal drug agents after he was arrested in New York on a charge of carrying the powerful painkiller oxycodone without a prescription, an attorney said. Kaczur, 28, wore a wire to help agents build a case against his alleged supplier, Daniel Ekasala, who was indicted Tuesday and remains free on an unsecured bond of $10,000.

• Former Patriots linebacker Rosevelt Colvin visited the Houston Texans and was undergoing a physical.
