GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Thousands of people have jammed a convention center in Grand Junction for a public hearing on proposed rules that would overhaul how the oil and gas industry is regulated in Colorado.
The meeting Tuesday by the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission is one of several planned this summer. The commission plans to adopt the rules by mid-August.
The proposals would implement two state laws intended to give more weight to environmental, public health and wildlife concerns when making decisions about oil and gas development.
The industry says the rules go too far, will drive up costs and could dampen companies’ interest in Colorado. Industry critics say the changes are overdue considering the record natural gas drilling going on.
