Matt Herges was terrific out of the bullpen for the Rockies early this season, but he’s slumping now.
The right-hander gave up two runs on three hits in the seventh inning Monday night as the Braves turned a 3-0 lead into a 5-0 comfort zone. Last Friday in Chicago, Herges was charged with his third loss and third blown save of the season in the White Sox’s three-run seventh. Opponents are hitting .447 (17-for-38) against Herges in his last eight outings.
“My pitches are getting up,” Herges said. “When you are going through a rough spot, you may not be as convicted with your pitches, and hitters can sniff that. I think all I need is one real good outing to get back on track and get out of this funk. I’m looking forward to getting back out there again as soon as possible. Hopefully they continue to give me the ball so I can do that.”
Pitching in.
Aaron Cook pinch hit for Ubaldo Jimenez in the fifth, looping a single into right field. It was the first pinch hit of Cook’s career. Cook not only has 10 victories this season, he’s hitting .267 (8-for-30).
