DENVER—Colorado may have overspent at least $4.7 million in federal funds for Medicaid, and an accountant who says she uncovered some of the errors has been fired.
Annmarie Maynard was dismissed Monday by the Department of Health Care Policy and Financing. She has filed a whistleblower complaint with the State Personnel Board.
Rep. Jim Kerr, R-Littleton, says the Legislative Audit Committee will inquire about why the state owes the money and why Maynard was fired.
KUSA-TV in Denver obtained memos that it said show the department has known about Medicaid spending errors since December 2007 and mistakes in a children health coverage program since December 2006.
Department officials deny hiding the information. Spokeswoman Joanne Lindsay says the situation is more like an overdraft of federal funds than a debt.
