SAN LUIS VALLEY — A federal trial to settle a dispute over water rights for the aquifer under the Great Sand Dunes begins Wednesday.

The Department of Justice claims it owns the rights to enough of the aquifer to maintain groundwater levels in the national park.

The Pueblo Chieftain reported that eight groups had opposed the federal claim. Only one remains, an investors’ group called Cotton Creek Circles.

The Colorado Supreme Court has rejected the private claims.
