Fire fighters are battling a grass fire in eastern El Paso County that has destroyed six buildings, including at least one home.
The fire started at 1 p.m. today from lightning, said Lari Savene, a spokeswoman for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department.
It was 80 percent contained at 7:30 p.m. Fire fighters expect to contain the blaze by 9:30 p.m.
Gusts of wind continue to sweep through the area, so fire fighters aren’t sure how long it will take to fully contain it. It’s not clear how many acres the fire has consumed, but there have been patches of fires within 10 square miles.
Residents in the area have been asked to evacuate, and the Red Cross is setting up a shelter at 350 South Ellicott Highway.
