Vince Chowdhury has announced his resignation from the Jefferson County School Board, six weeks after he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault for slapping his teenage daughter.
Chowdhury’s resignation is effective Thursday, the day that organizers of a recall effort planned to demand in a news conference that he leave the school board.
“I have made this decision after long conversation with my family,” Chowdhury said in a statement. “It is extremely difficult for me to step down, however, I must do what is in the best interest of my family.”
One of the recall organizers, Deb Dempsey, said of his resignation: “That’s wonderful news. I’m glad he’s putting the school district ahead of his needs.”
On July 9, Chowdhury pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault. He received a one-year suspended sentence for the June 17 incident in which he slapped his 16-year-old daughter for behaving in a way he thought was disrespectful. She also told police that he had choked her.
The arrest affidavit states Chowdhury became angry after he arrived home and his wife and daughter did not quickly open the garage door when he honked his car horn.
His wife, Katherine, said that when she told her husband she was calling 911, he said that he would hit her, the affidavit said.
Chowdhury told deputies he just “lost it” when his wife and daughter did not hear him honking the horn.
