A Hudson area man was shot twice this morning as he checked out a possible gasoline theft in a rural area.

The victim, 38-year-old Jacque Crawford, was hit with one shot in the left chest but a tool in his jacket pocket deflected the round, police said.

His injuries are not life threatening, the Weld County Sheriff’s Office said.

At about 5 a.m., Crawford was at home when he saw headlights at a neighboring turkey farm near Weld County Roads 10 and 43, south of Colorado 52, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.

Crawford was aware of gas thefts at the turkey ranch and walked about a quarter of a mile to check out the lights, the sheriff’s office said.

As Crawford approached a grain bin, a man in blue jeans and a baseball cap fired two shots from a small caliber gun at him.

Crawford was hit in the right shoulder and the second round hit his left jacket pocket. The second round was deflected by the tool.

The man who fired the shots ran north along County Road 43 and jumped into a vehicle, the Sheriff’s Office said. The only description of the vehicle is that it has “horizontal” tail lights.

Crawford walked back to his home, and his 12-year-old daughter called 911. He was taken to North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley.

Reached at home this afternoon, he declined to talk about what happened.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 970 356-4015, ext. 2825.
