DETROIT — The Detroit Red Wings re-signed defenseman Chris Chelios for one year Tuesday.

Chelios, 46, enters his 25th NHL season and his 10th with the Red Wings. He began his career with the Montreal Canadiens and also played for the Chicago Blackhawks. Last season, he became the second-oldest player in NHL history to appear in a game behind Gordie Howe. Chelios has 948 points in 1,616 regular-season games.

Detroit also signed defenseman Kyle Quincey to a two-year deal.

• Florida Panthers defenseman Keith Ballard agreed to a six-year contract extension.

Kobe to forgo surgery

LOS ANGELES — Kobe Bryant will not have surgery on his right pinkie because recovery would take too long. The Los Angeles Lakers star has played with damaged ligaments in the finger since February, but said he won’t have surgery after seeking opinions from specialists.

“When the doctors told me recovery from a procedure could be 12 weeks, I just decided now was not the time to have surgery,” Bryant said on his website . “What it really came down to for me is that I just didn’t want to miss any time ‘punching the clock’ for the Lakers, given all we are trying to accomplish as a team this NBA season.”

• Portland Trail Blazers forward Channing Frye will likely miss the start of the regular season after having surgery to remove bone spurs from his left ankle.

• The Philadelphia 76ers gave coach Maurice Cheeks his second contract extension in seven months, though terms were not disclosed.

Wie enters Q-school for LPGA.

Unable to earn her card through sponsor exemptions, Michelle Wie has entered the LPGA Tour qualifying school. The first stage will be at Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage, Calif., site of the Kraft Nabisco Championship, where Wie, 18, played in the final group of the LPGA’s first major when she was in eighth grade.

• Lynx guard Seimone Augustus was taken off the court in a wheelchair wearing a neck brace after hitting her head on the floor during the first quarter of Minnesota’s game against the Indiana Fever.
