AIR FORCE ACADEMY — University of Houston officials said a decision will be made no later than noon today where the Cougars’ game Saturday against Air Force will be played.

Hurricane Ike is projected to hit the Texas coast Friday morning, and the Houston area is in the storm’s path. Jim Trego, the academy’s senior associate athletic director for external affairs, was told the game would be played in Houston as scheduled or moved to Texas Stadium, the Dallas Cowboys’ home in Irving, Texas.

“There has been no discussion on potentially canceling the game,” Trego said. “We want to play it. They want to play it. They’re determined the game will be played even if it means moving it to Dallas.”

There aren’t any possibilities of playing the game on a different weekend because each team’s schedule is full and Air Force’s bye week is Sept. 27, when Houston plays at East Carolina. Trego said if the conditions were only wind and rain, the game would be played in Houston but the time of the game could change.

“At some point in time they have to pull the trigger on a decision,” Trego said. “We had agreed to play the game on Thursday, but we’re past the time to make a decision on that.

Air Force coach Troy Calhoun was open to wherever the game eventually is played.

“I just don’t think we can get concerned about that,” said Calhoun, whose team is 2-0. “Wherever or whenever you play, so be it.”

The Falcons practiced Tuesday with wet footballs in anticipation of adverse conditions Saturday.

Quarterback update.

Calhoun will go with senior Shea Smith, the starter in the first two games, and freshman Tim Jefferson as Smith’s backup this week against the Cougars.

But Calhoun wasn’t sure of the depth chart after this week, saying 5-foot-8, 185-pound freshman Asher Clark could move up the chart.

“Going into this game, it’s Smith and Jefferson,” Calhoun said. “But Asher Clark is closing the gap rapidly.”
