LINCOLN, Neb.—Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman says many of the Nebraska Army and Air National Guard forces deployed to help Louisiana recover from Hurricane Gustav will have their mission extended by about a week.
The relief operations will stay in place to help with preparations for the possible landfall by Hurricane Ike. The affected airmen and soldiers are now expected back Sept. 21.
National Guard officials are planning to return about 200 soldiers and airmen who are college students to Nebraska later this week to return to class.
The relief operation is the largest known out-of-state domestic emergency deployment in the Nebraska National Guard’s history. Nearly 1,000 soldiers and airmen from across the state were affected by the call-up.
