A former Broncos defensive back was charged Wednesday with vehicular homicide, drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Billy Jenkins, 34, faces up to 12 years in prison on the vehicular-homicide charge alone, according to Kathleen Walsh, spokeswoman for the Arapahoe County district attorney’s office.

Police say Jenkins, who played for the Broncos in 2000 and 2001, was driving a 2009 Dodge Journey that hit and killed Tracy Gill, 51, at the intersection of South Parker Road and East Quincy Avenue on Aug. 28.

Gill was riding his Honda scooter when he was rear-ended at 6:10 a.m. The scooter was behind a 2002 Kia Spectra, which was behind a 1998 Ford Escort. The vehicles were stopped in the right lane of the left-turn lanes going south on South Parker Road, police said.

Gill was thrown from his scooter and died at the scene.

Police said Jenkins’ Journey then struck the rear of the Kia, causing the Kia to rear-end the Ford.

Jenkins ran from his vehicle into nearby Cherry Creek State Park before returning to the scene, where he was taken into custody.
