Connoisseurs of motorcycles and art (some would say motorcycles are art) will gather Saturday for the Hells Angels’ sixth annual Choppers Art Show to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver.
Although many people now build choppers, the Hells Angels practically wrote the book on the genre once shunned by mainstream manufacturers but now a staple of their product lineups.
Devotees of the two-wheeled vehicles will be treated to a movable feast of glittering chrome, shimmering lacquer and custom metalwork in addition to paintings, drawings, posters, sculpture and photography.
The one-day show, which runs from 2 p.m. to 1 a.m., will spotlight one-of-a-kind custom motorcycles and their builders, as well as local and national artists and photographers.
As always, the Hells Angels restrict the bikes on display inside the gallery in the Santa Fe Art District to original vehicles that haven’t previously been exhibited in a Choppers Art Show, according to club spokesman Jeff Heley.
A highlight of the show will be an art signing by featured artist Sara Ray, who specializes in hot rods, pinups, rockabilly posters and World War II scenes. Her work has appeared on record covers, magazines, Fender and Gretsch guitars, T-shirts and posters, and, most recently, the Sucker Punch Sally’s line of custom motorcycles.
Local builders are welcome to compete in the ride-in custom motorcycle competition, which will be held at 4 p.m. The kids from the Boys and Girls Clubs once again will judge the event, Heley said.
“The gallery is right behind the Boys and Girls Club,” he said, “so there will be more access to the (club) so it will be more representative.”
Works of art and other motorcycle-related items will be offered for sale in a silent auction to benefit the club. Last year, the local Hells Angels chapter raised $3,000 for the kids, Heley said, which was up from the previous year.
“We’re trying to keep it on the rise,” he said.
A DJ will provide music for guests, and there will be beer (no Hells Angels social event would be complete without beer), cocktails and tacos.
