Coloradans would have saved $400 million had they winterized their homes last year, roughly a third of what was paid statewide to heat residential homes, according to a new report by the Colorado Public Interest Research Group.
The cost savings — up to about $600 a year for a family living in a home built in 1980 — would follow an initial expenditure on up-to-date items such as energy-efficient furnaces and windows, according to the report released Wednesday.
The group advocates better energy-efficiency standards for residential furnaces, broader application of programs to help low-income families save energy and a strengthening of local codes to require higher energy standards in new homes.
