GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Federal land managers have agreed to let a Colorado company reopen two underground uranium mines in western Colorado and eastern Utah and combine them into one operation straddling the border.

The Bureau of Land Management on Friday said Energy Fuels Resources can reopen the mines in Mesa County, Colo., and Grand County, Utah. They will operate as the Whirlwind Mine.

Energy Fuels, based in the Denver suburb of Lakewood, expects to mine 100 to 200 tons of uranium ore per day from the mine over the next 10 years, starting this year.

The ore will be trucked to Blanding, Utah, for processing.

The BLM says it has set protective, monitoring and reporting requirements for the mine.
