TOBACCO TRAFFICKING
For: 379/Against: 18 Members voted to crack down on those who sell tobacco products across state lines without paying state sales taxes. A yes vote was to pass a bill that would ban or police interstate cigarette shipments and make it a felony to engage in illegal tobacco trafficking. (HR 4081)

MEXICAN TRUCKS
For: 395/Against: 18 Members voted to prevent the administration from renewing a program in which a limited number of Mexican trucks can travel in the U.S. under the North America Free Trade Agreement. A yes vote was to pass a bill (HR 6630) blocking long-haul Mexican trucking.

MISSILE-DEFENSE BUDGET
For: 39/Against: 57 Senators refused to raise spending for the National Missile Defense in a bill (S 3001) that would budget $601 billion for U.S. military operations in 2009. A yes vote backed an attempt to add $271 million to the $9.3 billion already in the bill for U.S. missile defenses.

MILITARY BENEFITS
For: 94/Against: 2 Senators voted to end a policy that lowers spouses’ survivor benefits by the sum they receive in Dependency and Indemnity Compensation. The latter is a benefit for spouses of active-duty personnel who die from a service-related cause. The measure was added to S3001.
