OMAHA, Neb.—A trial is scheduled to begin Monday for a 20-year-old man charged with fatally shooting an Omaha college student.

Kyle Bormann of Omaha has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of 21-year-old Brittany Williams.

The University of Nebraska at Omaha student was hit by a rifle bullet on Jan. 20 as she sat in the drive-through lane of a fast-food restaurant in north Omaha.

Investigators have said Bormann was sitting in his car 100 to 200 yards away from the restaurant when he fired. Police said he did not know Williams.

Prosecutors say they’ll argue Bormann shot Williams because she was black; Bormann is white.

If convicted, Bormann could face life in prison. If the shooting is deemed a hate crime, he could be sentenced to death.
