SILVER CITY, N.M. — Mesa State scored 24 points in the fourth quarter Saturday for a 31-7 victory over Western New Mexico.
The Mustangs, who improved to 2-2, 2-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, are tied atop the league along with Colorado Mines, Chadron State and Nebraska-Kearney.
Mesa got on the scoreboard in the first quarter with a 47-yard pass from Phil Vigil to Justin Murray. There was no more scoring until the final period, when Bobby Coy scored on two runs, William Blevins returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown, and Jared Keating kicked a 41-yard field goal. Trammel McGill got the Mustangs’ (0-3, 0-2) only score on a 12-yard pass from Cody House.
Colorado Mines 30, Fort Lewis 9
DURANGO — The Orediggers (3-1, 2-0) dominated, as Fort Lewis’ only touchdown came with 43 seconds left when Justin Peters connected on a 32-yard pass to Justin Garman, who fumbled on the 1. Brian Englehardt emerged from a pile with the football in the end zone.
Nebraska-Kearney 37, Adams State 0
KEARNEY, Neb. — The Lopers scored three touchdowns on their first eight offensive plays in their rout of Adams State.
Freshman back Rustin Dring had two touchdowns in the first quarter, on 16- and 34-yard runs, and had 119 yards on 13 carries by halftime.
Chadron State 32, CSU-Pueblo 0
PUEBLO — John Ritzen and Aaron Cooksley combined for 158 yards rushing, and each scored a touchdown as the Eagles (3-1, 2-0) dominated from the start.
Western St. 34, N.M. Highlands 31
LAS VEGAS, N.M. — Western (1-2, 1-1) got second-half touchdowns from Nathan Acrey and Curtis Prock to hold off the Cowboys.
Sewanee 19, Colorado College 0
SEWANEE, Tenn. — Sewanee intercepted seven CC passes and won the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
