Fairmount Fire Protection District is hosting its annual open house to teach kids and their parents about fire safety.

Hundreds of people are expected at the free event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Ward Road park-n-Ride, West 44th Avenue and Ward Road in Wheat Ridge.

Live demonstrations will feature a smoke house, the Flight for Life medical-rescue helicopter, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad and Smokey Bear.

Garrett Thorne, a firefighter with the Fairmount district, is organizing the car-seat safety and check-up information booth.

“Seventy percent of car seats are installed incorrectly. Parents need to know to make sure kids are safe,” Thorne said, calling the open house a “preventative step.”

Face painting and food will keep kids entertained; the event’s target audience is children from kindergarten through high school and their parents. Fire safety will be the main focus.

“We want to teach kids to deal with situations,” Thorne said, “from smoke detectors to fire-escape routes and disaster preparedness.”
