MONTROSE, Colo.—A fire that heavily damaged the Montrose Athletic Club is being called “suspicious” in nature.
Montrose Fire Protection District Chief Bob Pistor says the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is helping search for the cause of the blaze, which broke out about 12:45 a.m. Wednesday.
No injuries are reported.
Crews arrived to find heavy smoke, and flames shooting through the building’s roof. Firefighters say the roof and floor of the 12,000-square-foot building later collapsed.
The blaze was brought under control shortly after 2 a.m., but crews remained on the scene until 5:30 a.m.
Club owner Mead Serra says a custodian would have been the last person to leave the club late Tuesday.
Damage to the building and contents is estimated at $750,000.
