CANON CITY, Colo.—Toxicology tests show that a Florence teenager who died last month was the victim of a methadone overdose.
Fremont County coroner Dr. Dorothy Twellman says 14-year-old Michael Hunter Dempsey was found woozy by his siblings shortly after midnight on Aug. 25. The boy stated that he had taken three methadone pills.
The teen was seen sleeping on the couch at 5 a.m., but the boy’s father called 911 after returning home from work shortly after 7 a.m.
A police report shows Daryl Dempsey told dispatchers that the boy had gotten into the father’s medication.
Fire crews tried to resuscitate the boy, but were unsuccessful.
Methadone is a narcotic used for pain relief and to treat heroin addiction.
