BOULDER, COLO. — Boulder voters will decide next month whether residents who aren’t eligible to vote or aren’t U.S. citizens will be allowed to serve on city boards and commissions.
Ballot Question 2E would eliminate a requirement in the city charter that applicants for the boards be registered to vote.
Applicants would just have to be 18 and a Boulder resident for at least a year.
Proponents say the change would help reach a broader group of people who can make meaningful contributions to local government.
Boulder resident Fred Rubin is among the critics. He urged the council not to put the proposal on the Nov. 4 ballot, saying it doesn’t make sense to give people not committed to becoming U.S. citizens a role on city boards that sometimes make quasi-judicial rulings.
