The Broomfield City Council will have to reconsider the city’s nuisance-property ordinance after opponents last week submitted enough valid signatures on a petition asking for its repeal.
Citizens for Fair Ordinances submitted 975 valid signatures, said Broomfield City and County Clerk Russ Ragsdale. For a repeal, 918 valid signatures were needed.
The City Council must now decide whether it should repeal the ordinance or put the issue up for a public vote, Ragsdale said.
The ordinance allows for harsher penalties for property owners who let their homes or yards fall into disrepair. Owners could be cited for peeling paint, damaged roofs and missing fencing.
Owners not in compliance would be ticketed and given 30 days to remedy the situation. If the fixes were not made in time, they could be taken to court and fined.
But members of Citizens for Fair Ordinances said homeowners shouldn’t be forced to make costly repairs during tough economic times.
