FORT COLLINS — A Wellington-area couple have been sentenced on charges stemming from a deadly 2004 standoff.
Michael Welch Jr. received three years in prison Monday for his role in the November 2004 standoff in which his father, Michael Welch Sr., was killed by Larimer County Sheriff’s Office sniper.
His wife, Lori Romero, received four years of intensive supervised probation.
A jury convicted the couple of menacing and other felony charges Oct. 17.
The standoff developed after Romero was pulled over while driving with the two Welches on Interstate 25. Authorities say she drove away after Welch Jr. gave a Colorado State Patrol trooper a false name, and led officers on a high-speed chase that ended at the family’s home.
A standoff ensued, and Welch Sr. was shot when he emerged and pointed a rifle at officers.
