MONTROSE, Colo.—Court documents say a 14-year-old boy told investigators he was obeying voices in his head when he allegedly slashed a Montrose High School student’s throat.

Michael Yates is being prosecuted as an adult in the Nov. 11 attack on 17-year-old Mallory Haulman. She is recovering.

Yates was formally charged Wednesday with attempted first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree assault.

An arrest warrant affidavit says Yates told officers he didn’t sleep the night before the attack and voices told him to hurt someone.

The affidavit quotes Yates as saying he went to the school, where he saw the victim and the voices said, “her.”

Another 14-year-old boy faces conspiracy and other charges in the attack. His name hasn’t been released.
