BOULDER, Colo.—A Boulder man has been airlifted to a Denver hospital after he was struck by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train.

Boulder police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley says the man appeared to have been under the influence of unknown substances when he passed out along a set of tracks in Boulder early Monday.

A BNSF conductor nearing the area shortly after midnight saw an object on the tracks and sounded the horn. The conductor activated emergency brakes after realizing the object was a human, but could not stop the nearly 6,600-foot train before hitting him.

He was taken to Boulder Community Hospital, then flown to St. Anthony’s Central Hospital in Denver with a severe leg injury.

Huntley says the man is expected to survive.

His name has not been released.
