Vodafone Group will work with Kenya’s Safaricom and Douglas County-based Western Union to pilot a mobile money-transfer service between the United Kingdom and the east African nation. Safaricom’s M-Pesa money-transfer service has attracted more than 4 million customers since it was started in March 2007, Vodafone said Monday.

Zain, a Kuwait-based phone company, France Telecom SA’s mobile unit Orange and Essar Communications under the brand of Yu all compete with Safaricom, Kenya’s biggest mobile-phone company. Safaricom had an 81 percent market share at the end of September but has predicted it will drop to about 65 percent in 2011.
