A new ramp from eastbound Interstate 70 on to westbound Colorado 58 will open to traffic by 5 p.m. today.
Officials from the Colorado Department of Transportation, Jefferson County and Wheat Ridge celebrated the completion of the I-70/Colorado 58 interchange project during a ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning.
The interchange was built in 1968 without ramps from eastbound I-70 to westbound Colorado 58 and from eastbound Colorado 58 to westbound I-70.
“These missing ramps have been a priority of the county for more than 20 years,” said Jeffco Commissioner Kevin McCasky.
The $33 million project began in February 2007 and was funded with $9.4 million in federal earmarks, $10 million from Jefferson County and $13.6 million in federal and state dollars.
Wheat Ridge, which officials said will see reduced traffic on local streets, paid $7 million to build the West 40th Avenue underpass.
