COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Authorities are considering whether a fatal shooting at a Colorado Springs home warrants charges in what could be a test of a law meant to protect homeowners from intruders.

The parents of 22-year-old Sean Kennedy say detectives have told them he broke a window and was shot while trying to get in through the back door of what he thought was his house after an evening of drinking Sunday night.

Police said in a statement the district attorney’s office will decide next week if charges will be filed or if the shooter is protected under Colorado’s “Make My Day” law, which allows people to use deadly force in their homes in self-defense.

Kennedy’s home was a block away from where he was shot.
