MINNEAPOLIS — Carl Pohlad, a billionaire banker whose Minnesota Twins won World Series titles in 1987 and 1991 during nearly his nearly quarter-century as owner, died Monday. He was 93.

“In my long career, I have never met a more loyal and caring human being,” Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig said.

According to 2008 rankings by , Pohlad’s net worth of $3.6 billion was second among Minnesotans and 102nd in the nation.

• Manager Mike Scioscia and the Los Angeles Angels agreed in principle on a multiyear contract extension that “goes well beyond” 2010, according to general manager Tony Reagins.

• Philadelphia Phillies reliever J.C. Romero will be suspended for the first 50 games of next season after testing positive for a banned supplement, reported.

• Outfielder Pat Burrell, who hit .250 with 33 homers, 33 doubles and 86 RBIs in 2008 with the Phillies, agreed on a $16 million, two-year contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.

• The Chicago Cubs and outfielder Milton Bradley reached a preliminary agreement on a $30 million, three-year contract. Bradley batted .321 with 22 homers for the Texas Rangers last season.

• The Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to trade or release Andruw Jones in exchange for the center fielder deferring much of the $22 million remaining on his contract.

• St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said he might turn to oft-injured ace Chris Carpenter as the team’s closer next season.

Florida’s Harvin says ankle 90 percent healed

MIAMI — Florida receiver Percy Harvin said his sprained ankle is “90 percent” healed — the result of spending nearly 100 percent of his time in the training room over the holidays.

• Jacksonville Jaguars assistant Tom Williams has been hired at Yale, becoming the first black head football coach at the Ivy League school. Williams, 38, replaces Jack Siedlecki, who retired in November after 12 seasons to become an assistant athletic director at Yale.

• North Carolina receiver Hakeem Nicks and Southern Mississippi linebacker Gerald McRath said they will forgo their senior seasons to enter the NFL draft.

• Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Rostislav Klesla will be sidelined up to four weeks with a lower body injury.
