Xcel Energy has signed a deal with NextEra Energy Resources for development of a 152-megawatt wind farm in northeastern Colorado.

The $300 million project, scheduled to generate power by the end of this year, will be the fifth-largest wind farm in Colorado. It will supply enough power to serve about 38,000 homes.

NextEra until recently operated as FPL Energy, a unit of the company that owns Florida Power & Light. FPL previously had developed two Logan County wind farms near the site of the new project.

Xcel said NextEra Energy was chosen from a request for proposals that resulted in bids for more than 2,400 megawatts of wind power. Xcel said it plans to acquire an additional 700 megawatts of wind power in coming years. Steve Raabe, The Denver Post
