AURORA — The city is changing its emergency citizen-notification system.

Residents will now be able to get alerts sent to their cellphones or through text messages, e-mails and fax numbers.

Previously, the “reverse 911” system sent citywide emergency notifications to someone’s land-line phone at home. But city officials will use new technology, saying more than 70 percent of 911 calls into its dispatch center are from cellphones.

The new system will not cost residents more money. It is being funded from the 911 fee, which is included in all telephone bills.

To change your notification process, log onto and click on the Emergency Citizen Notification link.
