A grass fire in Conifer has been contained, but one house was heavily damaged by flames, said a spokeswoman for the Elk Creek Fire Department.

Authorities initially responded to reports of a house on fire, and it was fully engulfed when units arrived, spokeswoman Jody Wagner said.

The grass fire, in the Blue Sky Trail area on Shadow Mountain along Colorado 73, was contained at 12:57 p.m., Wagner said. Authorities think an ember from the house fire may have sparked the second blaze.

An eighth of an acre burned, Wagner said. The fire didn’t spread to thick forest areas because there were no trees near the blaze.

The Elk Fire Department is the head fire department on the scene, but the Inter-Canyon, North Fork, Platte Canyon and Evergreen fire departments also responded.

“They will be working on it for quite some time because they look for hot spots and make sure that there’s no way the fire can spread,” Wagner said.
