A male motorist was killed on eastbound Interstate 76 when he drove his car off the right shoulder and slammed into a concrete column late Thursday night, authorities say.

The victim, identified as 26-year-old Jorge A. Martinez-Ruvalcaba of Denver, was pronounced dead at the scene after the 11:15 p.m. crash and ensuing fire at York Street, said Trooper Gilbert Mares of the Colorado State Patrol.

Martinez-Ruvalcaba was the only person in the red 1994 Buick Century it veered onto the shoulder, missed a guardrail, went airborne and crashed into a concrete support column at York Street, Mares said. The accident is under investigation.
