DENVER—A FedEx airplane has landed safely at Denver International Airport after its cockpit filled with smoke.

The Denver Department of Aviation says only a pilot and co-pilot were onboard. The two used emergency chutes to exit the plane, but neither was hurt.

Airport spokesman Chuck Cannon says a red alert for heightened response was issued as the pilots exited the 747 aircraft at about 8 p.m. Friday.

The airport has closed the runway on which the plane landed, and the Denver Fire Department has responded to the scene.

Cannon says he doesn’t think responders found any fire, “but I’m still waiting to be sure.” The cause of the smoke wasn’t immediately known.
