FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Attorneys for a man who served 10 years in prison for murder before his conviction was overturned are seeking more time in his lawsuit against Fort Collins and Larimer County officials.

Timothy Masters’ attorneys said in a court filing this week that they’re working “diligently” on the suit but need more time because of other cases they’re handling—including lawsuits against the federal government by Guantanamo Bay detainees.

They’re asking for a 30-day extension to respond to requests by the city and county to dismiss the case.

Masters was convicted in 1999 in the death of Peggy Hettrick of Fort Collins. He was released a year ago after hearings raised questions about how the case was prosecuted and advanced DNA tests failed to connect him to the slaying.

Masters filed a federal lawsuit last fall, arguing police and prosecutors engaged in a conspiracy to convict him and keep him in prison.
