El Paso County deputies today discovered more bones, as well as some clothing and keys, when they returned to a site where a human jawbone was discovered Thursday.

The jawbone was found by hikers near High Drive and Gold Camp Road and reported to the Colorado Springs Police Department . El Paso County investigators responded at 6 p.m. Thursday but suspended the search to wait for daylight.

Today, investigators said they found several more bones, a shoe, sock and set of keys , according to a news release from El Paso County Sheriff’s Department.

The bones are anywhere from three to 10 years old according to early estimates by the El Paso County coroner. Estimates may change pending further testing.

Lieutenant Lari Sevene said the body’s decomposition rate depends on several factors.

“When you’re contending with animals in the area — not to mention the elements: rain runoff and snow runoff — it’s hard to tell. It just depends how long it’s been there,” Seven said .

The bones are being sent by the coroner to an anthropologist . It will take several weeks before the identity of the body can be determined.
