ALAMOSA, Colo.—A Colorado man was shot and wounded by New Mexico State Police early Friday after a two-state chase punctuated by gunfire and rammings.
Charles Dale Conner Jr., 25, was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque early Friday for treatment of a gunshot wound in the arm, authorities said.
The Colorado State Patrol said the chase started after a trooper stopped to check on a pickup on a highway east of Alamosa at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday. The trooper became suspicious that the driver was drunk and also spotted several large knives in the truck.
The trooper and an Alamosa County sheriff’s deputy tried to pull the man from the pickup when he scuffled with them and fled in the pickup, the patrol said. State troopers and deputies from Alamosa and Costilla counties pursued.
The pickup repeatedly rammed the cruisers, narrowly missing the officers, and sheriff’s deputies fired at the truck, the patrol said.
When the pickup crossed the state line, New Mexico State Police officers and Taos County deputies punctured one of its tires with spike belts and it ran off the road north of Questa, authorities said.
The state police said one of its officers shot and wounded the driver near the end of the pursuit.
Authorities in the two states were consulting on charges to be filed.
