COLORADO SPRINGS — Witnesses say a brush fire that threatened several Colorado Spring homes started after someone set off fireworks in a park.

The blaze started about 2:30 p.m. Saturday west of Interstate 25 and created a plume of brown smoke visible for miles as gusty winds pushed flames up a brush-choked ridge.

Fire officials are investigating reports that children were lighting firewood.

Fire Department spokesman Lt. Kriss Soppe says up to 50 firefighters and 15 trucks limited the blaze to about 10 acres, according to early estimates.
