A Colorado Springs man and his dog spent Friday night outside after his car crashed, and he was unable to call for help.

James McLaughlin, 21, was driving his Subaru on Lower Gold Camp Road about 9 p.m. Friday when he lost control and went down an embankment, police said in a report.

The car plunged 500 to 600 feet down to Columbine Trail. McLaughlin was thrown out. His dog wasn’t hurt.

McLaughlin couldn’t climb back up, and he couldn’t find his cellphone until the next morning, when police said he called for help about 8:45 a.m.

It took rescuers about two hours to get him back up on the road.

He was taken to Penrose Hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries,” the report said.

“It’s a good idea to always have your cellphone close on your person, so you have immediate access to call for help and not have to wait for 12 hours,” Lt. Steve Tobias of the Colorado Springs Police Department told the Gazette.
